Casement Windows
Side‑hinged or top‑hung casement windows — the workhorse of Irish housing. Made at our Westmeath factory in uPVC, aluminium, timber and aluclad. NSAI‑certified U‑values from 0.7 W/m²K.
Casement windows are the most‑chosen window style in Ireland — and have been for decades. They open with a simple side‑hinged or top‑hung swing, seal tightly when closed, and work as well on a 1970s semi as they do on a new‑build A‑rated home.
Wright Windows has been making casement windows at our Milltownpass factory in Co. Westmeath since 1969. We build every casement we sell — in uPVC, aluminium, timber or aluclad — to your exact opening sizes, glazed to your spec and fitted by our own installation crew. Whether you’re replacing a tired set of 80s frames or speccing a new build to an A‑rated BER target, casement is almost always the sensible starting point.

How They Work
A simple, reliable mechanism — with a tight seal.
A casement window is hinged on the side (side‑hung) or the top (top‑hung), and swings outward on a friction stay. There’s no sliding track to clog, no chain to break, and no concealed gearing — just hinge, stay and a multi‑point locking handle. That mechanical simplicity is why casement windows have been the Irish default since the 1980s.
When the window closes, the sash pulls in against a continuous weather seal around all four edges. Multi‑point locking pulls the sash tight at three to five points. The result is one of the most airtight, draught‑free seals you can buy — a big part of why casement performs so well on U‑value and BER.
Why Casement
Key Benefits
- Best‑in‑class thermal seal. Continuous compression weather seal + multi‑point locking pulls the sash tight at multiple points.
- Lowest U‑values in our range. Triple‑glazed uPVC casement reaches 0.7 W/m²K; aluminium reaches 0.8 W/m²K.
- Wide opening for ventilation. Side‑hung casements open to 90° for maximum airflow and easy cleaning from inside.
- Multi‑point locking standard. Internal beading and toughened safety glass standard across the range.
- Suits any property. Looks at home on Georgian, mid‑century, suburban semi or contemporary new build.

Best Suited For
Where casement makes most sense.
- Replacement projects on 1970s–2000s housing stock where casement is already the visual norm.
- New builds chasing A‑rated BER and SEAI grant qualification on a sensible budget.
- Bedrooms and living rooms needing maximum opening for ventilation in summer.
- Side‑passage openings where outward swing is preferred over inward‑tilting alternatives.
- Heritage replacements — flush‑sash casement variants and our R9 Legacy system work on planning‑controlled jobs.

Casement Windows FAQ
Common Questions
What’s the difference between side‑hung and top‑hung casement?
Side‑hung casements are hinged on the left or right and swing outwards for full ventilation and easy cleaning — the typical choice for bedrooms and living rooms. Top‑hung casements are hinged at the top and open outwards from the bottom — usually specified above worktops, behind sinks, or as ventilation lights above larger fixed panes. Most casement frames combine both in a single composition.
Are casement windows energy efficient?
Yes — casement is the most energy‑efficient style we build. The continuous compression seal around all four edges and multi‑point locking pull the sash tight against the frame. Our uPVC casements reach U‑values as low as 0.7 W/m²K with triple glazing (WEP A1 rating), aluminium reaches 0.8, and timber/aluclad reach 0.84 — all comfortably clearing SEAI grant thresholds.
Are casement windows secure?
Yes. Every Wright casement comes with multi‑point locking (typically 3–5 locking points), internal beading (so the glass can’t be removed from outside), and toughened safety glass as standard. We can spec laminated glass and key‑locking handles where required.
Can I get casement windows in colours other than white?
Yes — over 100 colour options across uPVC and aluminium, including dual‑colour finishes (different inside and out) at no surcharge. Popular choices: anthracite outside / white inside, bog oak outside / cream inside, plus full RAL colour matching.
