Tilt and Turn Windows
Tilt the sash inwards for safe, draught‑free ventilation. Swing it fully open inwards for cleaning, escape and maximum airflow. Made in Westmeath in uPVC, aluminium and aluclad.
Tilt and turn is the European‑style window standard now spec’d on most Irish apartments and a growing share of new builds. A single handle gives you two completely different opening modes — tilt in from the top for ventilation, or turn the full sash inwards on a side hinge for cleaning, escape or wide‑open airflow.
Wright Windows manufactures tilt and turn at our Milltownpass factory in uPVC, aluminium and aluclad. The mechanism is concealed German‑made hardware, the seal is multi‑point, and the U‑values match our casement range. Particularly popular on upstairs bedrooms (no fall risk for kids when tilted) and apartments above ground level (clean both sides from inside).

How They Work
One handle. Two positions. Three uses.
Turn the handle 90° (horizontal) and the sash hinges on the side — it swings the full sash inwards into the room, just like a door. That’s the ‘turn’ mode: full opening, easy access to clean the outside of the glass, and a usable escape route.
Turn the handle 180° (pointing up) and the sash tilts inwards from the top, hinged at the bottom — opening a draught‑free vent gap of around 100mm at the top. That’s the ‘tilt’ mode: secure trickle ventilation with the window effectively locked against intrusion, even overnight.
Why Tilt and Turn
Key Benefits
- Child‑safe ventilation. Tilt mode opens the top of the sash inwards — no fall risk from upstairs windows.
- Clean both sides from inside. Turn mode swings the full sash into the room — ideal for apartments and upper floors.
- Better security overnight. Tilt mode looks closed from the outside and resists forced entry.
- Fire escape‑rated. Full inward swing creates a clear opening that meets building reg means‑of‑escape requirements.
- Excellent thermal seal. Multi‑point locking pulls the sash tight at multiple points around all four edges.

Tilt and Turn FAQ
Common Questions
How does a tilt and turn window actually work?
A single handle controls both modes. Turn the handle 90° (horizontal) and the sash hinges on the side, swinging fully inwards like a door. Turn the handle 180° (pointing up) and the sash tilts inwards from the top, opening around 100mm at the top for ventilation. Handle pointing down is fully locked.
Are tilt and turn windows safe for children?
Yes — that’s one of the strongest arguments for the style on upstairs bedrooms. In tilt mode, the opening is at the top, hinged at the bottom — there’s no fall risk and no usable gap a child can climb through. We can also fit child‑restricted handles that lock out the full‑turn function entirely.
Can I clean both sides of the glass from inside?
Yes — that’s the main reason tilt and turn is the standard apartment window in Europe. Turn mode swings the sash fully into the room, giving you safe access to the outer face of the glass without needing a ladder, cradle or window‑cleaner.
Do tilt and turn windows meet fire escape regulations?
Generally, yes — the full inward turn creates an unobstructed clear opening that meets Irish Building Regulation Part B means‑of‑escape requirements for habitable rooms. Specific compliance depends on sash size and head height; we’ll confirm at design stage.
