Fixed Windows
Picture‑frame fixed lights for maximum view, minimum frame and a thermally airtight seal. Standard glazing options up to 44mm triple. Made in Westmeath in uPVC, aluminium, timber and aluclad.
A fixed (or picture) window has no opening sash — just a single glazed unit set straight into the frame. That gives you more glass area, a slimmer overall sightline, and the best thermal seal possible (nothing to seal against, no hinge to gasket).
Wright Windows manufactures fixed lights in uPVC, aluminium, timber and aluclad to your exact opening sizes. Specified alongside an opening casement or tilt‑and‑turn light to handle ventilation, fixed windows are the right answer wherever the view is the point — gable‑end picture windows, kitchen‑view splashbacks, stairwell apertures.

No Hinge, No Compromise
The window that’s just glass and frame.
A fixed window is exactly what it sounds like: a sealed glazed unit set permanently into the frame, with no opening sash. Because there’s no hinge, no gasket and no mechanism, the frame can be slimmer, the glass area larger, and the thermal seal more complete than any opening window.
We typically spec fixed lights alongside a single opening light in the same composition — for example, a large picture window with a slim tilt‑and‑turn opener at one side for ventilation. That gives you the best view‑to‑ventilation ratio possible.
Why Fixed
Key Benefits
- Maximum glass. No hinge or mechanism means more glass area in the same opening.
- Slimmest sightlines. Aluminium fixed lights deliver the narrowest frame profile in our range.
- Best thermal seal. No opening joint to gasket; triple glazing reaches U‑values down to 0.7 W/m²K.
- Lowest cost per m² of glass. Cheaper than equivalent opening lights of the same size.
- Largest spans. Fixed configurations support the biggest single‑unit sizes we make.

Best Suited For
Where fixed windows win.
- Gable‑end and feature picture windows on contemporary builds.
- Above stairwells, double‑height halls and split‑level living rooms.
- Side‑by‑side with an opening light for ventilation control.
- Large kitchen, snug or living‑area apertures where view is the priority.
- Triple‑glazed PassivHaus and A‑rated builds chasing the lowest U‑value.

Fixed Windows FAQ
Common Questions
What’s the difference between a fixed window and a picture window?
Nothing — the terms are used interchangeably. ‘Fixed’ refers to the mechanism (no opening sash); ‘picture’ refers to the use (framing a view). Both describe the same product: a single sealed glazing unit set straight into the frame.
How do I get ventilation if the window doesn’t open?
We typically combine a fixed light with a slimmer opening light in the same frame — for example, a 2m wide fixed picture window with a tilt‑and‑turn opener at one side. Trickle vents in the frame head can also be specified for continuous background ventilation.
How big can a fixed window be?
Aluminium fixed lights handle the largest single‑unit sizes in our range — suitable for full gable‑height picture windows. uPVC has smaller maximum sizes due to profile rigidity. Larger spans are split into mullioned compositions of multiple fixed lights.
Are fixed windows more energy efficient than opening windows?
Marginally, yes — with no hinge joint or gasket interface, the thermal seal is more complete. The U‑value advantage is small (a few hundredths of a W/m²K) but on a triple‑glazed PassivHaus build it matters. The bigger gain is the larger glass area letting in more solar heat in winter.
